WHITEKIRK TO EAST LINTON
Binning Wood, 1 mile south of Whitekirk
First planted in 1707, this large woodland was chopped down during the second world war to build fighter planes, then replanted to the original plan. A small part of the woodland is now a natural burial ground.
St Mary’s Church, Whitekirk
Formerly a major centre for pilgrimage and healing due to the nearby holy well – the exact location of which has since been lost. In times past 10,000 pilgrims would travel through Whitekirk on their way to North Berwick. The oldest part of the church is constructed of red sandstone and dates back to the 12th century. It is one of the best preserved medieval churches in Scotland. Its final Sunday Service took place in 2021.
Prestonkirk Parish Church, East Linton
The original church is said to have been founded by St Baldred. The church tower dates from 1631, the main building was built in 1770 and extended in 1824. The St Baldred stained glass window is an attractive feature of the church.
